A WordPress theme gives your website its look. It helps decide how your words, pictures, and menus appear. Think of your content as the furniture and your theme as the room around it.

What can a theme change?

  • Type: the style and size of your text.
  • Color: the colors used for links, buttons, and backgrounds.
  • Layout: where your content sits and how wide it is.
  • Details: the way menus, pictures, and post lists appear.

What stays with your site?

Your saved posts, pages, and media stay in WordPress when you switch themes. Their appearance can change. Some theme-specific settings, menus, and widget areas may need attention after the switch.

Keep the message. Change the presentation.

Try it in class

  1. Read this post with the first theme.
  2. Switch to another theme.
  3. Open the same post again.
  4. Name three things that look different and one thing that stayed the same.

Look closely: Compare this title, the bullet list, the quote, and the space around each paragraph.
